The first Edmonton Cup was a friendly soccer match that took place on July 25, 2009 at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alberta Soccer Association. Argentina’s River Plate beat England’s Everton FC 1-0 in a game billed as Argentina vs. England. Ariel Ortega chipped Carlo Nash to score the only goal.

Twice English champions and FA Cup winners, Portsmouth FC are the most successful southern club outside of London and have played seven consecutive seasons in the English Premier League.

However, the team was docked nine points this season just gone for “entering administration,” relating to their financial situation. With that loss in points, Portsmouth was therefore relegated to the Football League Championship (the Championship) this year.

As part of their restructuring, the club revealed that they would be looking to start next year’s season (2010-2011) with a whole new squad. Players with expiring contracts will be allowed to leave.

As such, their friendly match in The Edmonton Cup at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium July 21st will be an exciting affair for soccer fans who will undoubtedly have a chance to see many new prospects.

Portsmouth (also known as Pompey) home matches have been played at Fratton Park since the club’s formation in 1898; a unique stadium that features a mock Tudor-style facade. It seats 20,224. The team’s ultimate goal remains a new 40-45,000-seat stadium at Horsea Island near Port Solent.

Paul Groves and Ian Woan remain as head coaches.

Pompey’s 39-year-old keeper, David James, has been selected in England’s 23-man World Cup squad and will wear the number 1 jersey. James will hope that England progress as far as possible at this years tournament, in order to extend his cap collection, which currently stands at 50. England’s first match is against the USA on Saturday, June 12th. James is the only representative on the England squad from Portsmouth.
